It appears we will not be seeing Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua anytime soon – if at all – according to promoter Frank Warren.
Over the weekend, Fury moved his record on to 33-0-1 with a comfortable victory against heavyweight veteran, Derek Chisora, to set up what he has predicted will be the biggest year of his career in 2023.
‘The Gypsy King’ says next year he wants to fight Oleksandr Usyk first in an undisputed clash and then follow up with a bout against ‘The Juggernaut’ Joe Joyce.
“We’re hopefully gonna see the biggest year of my career. [In 2023] we’re gonna get the big fights that the fans really crave,” Fury said at his post-fight press conference on Saturday.
“First of all let’s talk about Usyk. I’m ready, I’m willing, to take on Usyk next – whether it’s gonna be in Saudi Arabia or back here in the UK. Both places will be fantastic.
“And let’s give the fans one champion, one name, one face. Usyk’s up to the challenge. He came over tonight, so fair play to him.”
Fury continued: “But if it doesn’t for X, Y or Z reasons, then we’ll have Joe Joyce at Wembley next year as well.
“But providing the Usyk one does happen, then I’ll do him and then I’ll have Joe Joyce as well at Wembley, why not?”
With that being said, there is one other fight that fans are desperate to see and that is a ‘Battle of Britain’ clash with Joshua, but Warren claims it’s not on his radar.
When asked where Joshua might fit into Fury’s future plans, he told iD Boxing: “Nowhere, we’ve got better fights to put on now.
“He had his opportunity and as I say we have bigger and better fights.
While Fury is no longer an option, Warren did offer up two other heavyweights as potential opponents for Joshua, saying: “I have no problem making him against Joe Joyce or Daniel Dubois if he wants to make his way back into the top table.”
The more likely option for Joshua, however, is a rematch with Dillian Whyte, as promoter Eddie Hearn says he is the frontrunner to take on ‘AJ’ next year.
