Having won two consecutive titles, Max Verstappen is destined to dominate Formula 1 over the next years.
The 2021 title may have been decided by fine margins, but the Dutchman dominated last season, making the podium 17 times and winning 15 races.
In fact, runner-up Charles Leclerc finished 146 points behind Verstappen, who secured the title with four races to go, winning three of them.
Coulthard defends Verstappen
Many have argued that Verstappen won the title due to his impressive RB18. However, former F1 driver David Coulthard believes that such a claim is absurd.
“Verstappen is already one of the greats,” Coulthard said, as reported by Formule1.nl.
“Only a f***ing idiot would say that he only wins because he has a good car.
“Just as Lewis [Hamilton] does not need nine world titles for me to consider him one of the best drivers in the sport, Max does not need three to be considered one of the best.”
It has to be noted that Verstappen has won 25 races and picked up a total of 849.5 point across the last two seasons.
In fact, the Dutchman has registered 35 victories at the age of 25. If he grabs another six victories, he will match the record of legendary Ayrton Senna (41).
Only Senna, Alain Prost (51), Sebastian Vettel (53), Michael Schumacher (91) and Hamilton (103) have managed more wins than Verstappen.
Verstappen has been better than his teammates
As some would point out, Mexican Checo Perez did drive the same car as Verstappen last season, but he won just two races, finishing third 149 points behind his teammate.
“After all, none of his teammates have been able to keep up with him,” Coulthard added.
“Max is a beast on the track.
“He’s a winning machine who doesn’t give a damn what we have to say about him. It’s unbelievable.”
