Josh Warrington is absolutely desperate for a unification fight and he’s willing to go to drastic lengths to get it.
On Saturday night, Warrington will take on the mandatory challenger to his IBF world title in the form of Luis Alberto Lopez, as the pair will clash at the First Direct Arena in Leeds.
This will be Warrington’s fourth world title defence, despite having called out the likes of WBA champion, Leo Santa Cruz, WBC title holder, Rey Vargas, and the man with the IBF strap, Emanuel Navarrete.
He has spoken before about his dream to follow in the footsteps of Ricky Hatton and Joe Calzaghe by travelling over to America to take on another of the division’s champions.
“I maybe sound a little bit obsessed with going to America,” Warrington told talkSPORT, “but it’s one of those things that you want to tick off the box.
“I grew up watching the likes of Ricky Hatton and Joe Calzaghe, seeing them go over there, I even seen Carl Frampton fight out there before I boxed him myself.
“I remember there was a little moment where I was walking along the [Las Vegas] strip, stood on the bridge and I could see his green and white army walking down and I thought I’d love to mimic that and have the Leeds fans out there, but the casinos might not appreciate them.”
Warrington reiterated this in an interview with Boxing Social when talking about what he wanted after his mandatory fight. “To get that big unification fight, to get that big fight against another champion that I’ve been wanting for such a long time.
“If I don’t get the shot after the mandatory then what the f****** hell do I have to do.
“This will be my sixth world title fight, at least let me have a go, because it’s the f****** unknown.
“Alright, if I’m not good enough or I have had a dip then I’ll go f****** find out and if I get chinned, I get chinned and then I’ll come back over here and do it domestically.
“We’re bringing the big numbers, I’ve beat who I have to beat and I don’t know what else I’ve got to do.
Warrington then joked about how far he was willing to go to secure a world title unification fight. “I’ll start getting my c*** out at press conferences!”
