Ime Udoka’s time in the Boston Celtics could have reached its conclusion.
In a discussion between HoopsHype’s Mike Scotto and The Athletic’s Jared Weiss, there is a looming belief that Udoka won’t be retained by the Celtics anymore at the end of his season-long suspension.
“I spoke with four NBA executives this week about the Ime Udoka situation in Boston. Each of those four executives told HoopsHype they don’t think Udoka will return as coach of the Boston Celtics after his yearlong suspension is done,” Scotto revealed.
“That’s the consensus,” Weiss responded. “I haven’t had anyone in the organization tell me they don’t think he’s coming back. I feel like they’re moving on with that expectation and that the reason for a suspension is more about whatever legal processes are happening right now rather than they genuinely want to reassess it in the future.
“I’m sure there is some degree of uncertainty whether or not they would bring him back. I don’t think it’s like he’s fired, and it’s set in stone, and that’s it. I’m sure there’s some evaluation that has to be done at some point, but it seems so unlikely that he would come back.”
Udoka’s scandal created a major dramatic speculation within the NBA landscape.
It was revealed initially that Udoka was found having an improper consensual relationship with a female staff member. On the address made by team governor Wyc Grousbeck, the law firm that was hired to investigate the case discovered that the mentor has “a volume of violations” on the incident.
ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski detailed last week that Udoka used “crude language” to a female subordinate before his consensual relationship with a female staff began. The “power dynamic” stood up as a factor in the suspension.
With Udoka out, President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens has appointed the young Joe Mazzulla to the interim head coaching role. Amid murmurs of lack of experience, the franchise maintained their belief in Mazzulla leading the Cs back to another solid postseason run.
In his first year of taking a coaching mantle, Udoka flipped the Celtics’ fortunes around and led them to an NBA Finals finish. With his basketball teachings already flowing on the team lineup, Mazzulla has inherited a daunting challenge to spearhead them towards the 18th banner.
