Jerry Jones maintains cautious optimism about Dak Prescott injury update

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones remains optimistic about quarterback Dak Prescott’s return in the coming weeks.

Prescott is still struggling to grip a football, leaving some Cowboys fans to wonder if he’s really making progress in his recovery from a thumb injury. Jones maintains that’s the case, despite the fact that Cooper Rush is likely to see action again this Sunday and perhaps beyond.

“Well, I know that it’s better, and I know that he’s going to go out there every day and make progress towards being able to grip the ball,” Jones said, via Mark Lane of Bloggin’ The Boys. “I don’t know that you could ask for better news, technically, physically in how it’s responding, how it’s healing, so to speak. And, so, all of those things are on go, and I don’t know that as we go by each day if considering the injury — considering the location of the injury — I don’t know that you could make any more progress. There’s some things here about healing that I often say only the man upstairs knows how that works. But he’ll have a big week and he’ll be hard on himself getting it ready to go. It’s all I can say.”

Rush playing well offers Dallas the luxury of not rushing back their Pro Bowl-level starter. They’ll need Prescott healthy for the hopeful postseason run ahead.

Jones still left the door open for Prescott to start any given Sunday, but it would be a surprise if he were ready to go this week against the Los Angeles Rams. It would also be throwing him into harms way against one of the better defensive lines in football.

Dallas as an organization has remained unified behind Dak, despite Rush’s impressive resume-building stretch. The Cowboys pay Prescott far too much money to bench him in favor of someone like Rush. And, frankly, when both players are at their best, Prescott is the far superior player.

If Dallas has learned anything during this stretch, it’s to perhaps not rely so heavily on Prescott. The play-calling with Rush behind center has been working. Why change it now?
